Anybody who knows me will tell you that I’m probably THE biggest fan of Hotel Du Vin, having discovered the small chain of boutique hotels a number of years ago. Now, whenever we’re in a town where they have a hotel, we choose to stay with them. We even had our wedding reception in their Bristol hotel!
Last week, when Dickie was posted to Leeds Airport, I decided to take Bells to join him and to explore the Harrogate Hotel Du Vin in North Yorkshire. The hotel was perfectly located, within walking distance of all of Harrogate’s bars, restaurants and independent boutiques, which I loved. My favourite area was Montpellier Quarter which is just next to the hotel and has lots of antique shops, high end fashion boutiques and awesome coffee shops.
The hotel had parking outside of the hotel for just £10 for 24 hours although there is also plenty of free street parking from 6pm. When you come armed with the kitchen sink like us, it’s really convenient.
We were greeted by the warmth of the hotel which oozed French boutique elegance, for which Hotel Du Vin is so well known; the sweeping staircase, leather sofas and cosy bar which resembles a New York loft. Everything was so familiar, it was like being home away from home… only nicer.
Having been shown to our room, we were welcomed to all of the little extras that we’ve come to expect of Hotel Du Vin – sumptuous bath robes, ESPA bath products, rain showers, a huge TV, Nespresso machine with complimentary coffee and a huge (and well stocked!) mini bar.
Whilst years ago, the prospect of such a well stocked mini-bar would have filled me with joy (and still does if Bells is driving me to it), as a new mama, having the facilities to keep things refrigerated is invaluable.
The rooms were super spacious (we’d booked a superior, but they’re all well sized) which meant that even the jumperoo made the journey. That got some interesting looks as we arrived… I think they were worried that we were actually moving in. Booking a superior room also means that you’ll get a roll top bath, which is really handy when you’re a routine freak like me. It means your mini person still gets their daily soak before bed!
One thing that is guaranteed at Hotel Du Vin is a good night’s sleep… the only place where I prefer the bed to my own. The curtains are so thick that they’re completely blacked out, leading to Bells’ best night sleep to date… I wanted to take them home with us.
With Dickie working earlies, we opted to take advantage of their Bed, Breakfast and Dinner offer as it meant that we could set up camp and easily take the little snoozy Bells to bed after she’d filled her tum with delicious food (yes we actually ordered her stuff from the menu). The food didn’t disappoint, it was totally scrummy and boy did we fill our boots, eating 3 courses every evening! We stayed 5 nights and didn’t eat the same thing twice.
My favourite meal of the day however, was breakfast. You can choose between a hot breakfast and/or a continental breakfast. Usually I’d be hot all of the way, but the continental consisted of gorgeous yogurts, breakfast pots and pastries… it was so good.
As for the staff, they genuinely couldn’t do more to make us feel comfortable – be that ensuring Bells had a high chair set up before we got to the restaurant, bringing room service or even preparing a mega-early breakfast for Dickie to take to work with him.
Even though we were there for plenty of time, there was lots that I still wanted to do – such as experiencing the hotel’s afternoon tea and lazing in their beautiful spa. I’m hoping to escape just the two of us in the not to distant future to make the most of all of the facilities. In the meanwhile, we’ve set ourselves a challenge – to stay in each of the hotels!
